Where Health & Healing Align

Occupational Therapy in Metuchen, NJ

Looking for occupational therapy in Metuchen that addresses why your body hurts during everyday activities, not just where it hurts? Our OT team at The Source Wellness Center on Essex Avenue treats work-related pain, posture issues, neuromuscular conditions, post-injury rehabilitation, and pediatric and neurodiverse care. Two licensed occupational therapists. One integrated clinical team. Most PPOs, FSA, and HSA accepted.

What makes occupational therapy at The Source different

Two licensed OTs with serious credentials

Most occupational therapy in the Metuchen area is delivered through hospital systems where the patient never gets to choose their therapist. At The Source, you work with one of two named, credentialed OTs. Mindy Colucci OTR/L brings ergonomic expertise from corporate consulting work with Blue Apron, HBO, and NBC. Nia Patel OTR/L specializes in orthopedic, neuromuscular, and neurodiverse care across all ages. Both work with you directly, not through a rotating team.

Workplace and ergonomic expertise

Mindy’s career includes building corrective programs for thousands of employees dealing with posture-related and overuse injuries at major companies. That depth shows up in how she treats. If your pain is driven by how you sit, type, lift, or move through your workday, she has seen patterns like yours hundreds of times and knows what actually fixes them.

Integrated with the rest of our clinical team

Our OTs work alongside our chiropractors, acupuncturists, and massage therapists. If your back pain needs adjustment and movement retraining and soft-tissue work, the team coordinates the plan instead of bouncing you between three different clinics. Care plans scale to your case.

Occupational therapy vs physical therapy. What is the difference?

Most people do not know the difference between OT and PT, and that is fine. The short answer is: physical therapy focuses on restoring movement and strength. Occupational therapy focuses on helping you function in your daily life, your work, and your environment. There is real overlap, but the focus is different.

Physical therapy (PT) treats

R
Restoring strength and movement after injury or surgery

Conditions our occupational therapists treat in Metuchen

Our OTs treat a wider range of conditions than most patients realize. The common thread is that the condition affects how you function in your daily life, at work, or in your environment.
R

Posture-related pain

From desk jobs, repetitive lifting, prolonged standing, or carrying kids. We assess your specific movement patterns and build a plan to fix them.
R

R

Hand and upper extremity injuries

Hand therapy for post-surgical recovery, fractures, tendinitis, and chronic conditions.
R

R

R

Auto accident injuries

OT for restoring daily function and addressing post-traumatic pain patterns.
R

Posture and balance issues

For older adults at risk of falls and for younger patients with chronic instability.
Most of our OT patients come in for one specific issue and find the work helps with several others. That is the upside of integrated care.
Post-Workout Recovery

What to expect on your first occupational therapy visit

R

Full intake and movement assessment

Your OT will take a complete history. Where it hurts, what activities make it worse, what your daily routine looks like, what your job looks like, and what other care you are receiving. This is not a generic intake form. It is a clinical conversation focused on how your body functions in your actual life.
R

Functional movement and posture screen

Your OT will watch how you move. How you sit, stand, lift, reach, and use your hands. For pediatric cases, this includes sensory and developmental screening. For workplace cases, this includes simulating the postures and movements that are causing pain.
R

Clear plan with home-care strategies

You leave knowing what is wrong, what we recommend, how many visits we expect it to take, and what you can do at home between visits. OT is unique because the work continues outside the clinic. Your OT will give you specific exercises, ergonomic adjustments, or movement strategies to use daily.
R

Coordinated care if needed

If your case would benefit from chiropractic adjustment, soft tissue massage, or acupuncture, your OT will tell you. The team coordinates in-house.

Insurance we accept

R
Most PPO plans
R

Cash pay rates available on request
R
Care plans with reduced per-visit cost

Frequently asked questions about occupational therapy in Metuchen

What does an occupational therapist do?

Occupational therapists help patients function better in their daily lives, work environments, and home routines. We treat the underlying patterns that cause pain or limit function, including posture, movement habits, ergonomics, and the physical demands of work or daily living. Common conditions include posture-related pain, work-related injuries, hand therapy, post-stroke rehabilitation, neuromuscular conditions, and pediatric or neurodiverse care.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?

Physical therapy focuses on restoring strength, movement, and physical function. Occupational therapy focuses on helping you function in your daily life, work, and environment. There is real overlap. A PT might help you recover knee strength after surgery. An OT would help you return to climbing stairs at home, using public transit, and doing your job after that same surgery. Many patients benefit from both.

How much does occupational therapy cost in Metuchen, NJ?

Cost varies by insurance and treatment plan. For insured patients, expect a typical copay of 20 to 50 dollars per visit. Workers compensation and auto accident PIP cases are typically covered 100 percent. Cash pay rates are available on request. Call (848) 260-0140 to verify your specific plan.

Does insurance cover occupational therapy in NJ?

Yes, in most cases. OT is one of the most consistently covered services in healthcare. Most PPO plans cover OT when prescribed for a specific condition. Medicare covers OT for qualifying conditions. Workers compensation covers it for workplace injuries. Auto accident PIP claims cover it for post-collision rehabilitation. FSA and HSA cards universally cover OT. We verify your benefits before your first visit.

When do I need occupational therapy?

Common signs you may benefit from OT include pain that returns whenever you do certain daily activities, work tasks that have become uncomfortable or painful, difficulty with fine motor tasks like writing, typing, or buttoning, challenges returning to daily life after surgery or injury, chronic posture-related pain, or developmental and sensory concerns for children. If you are unsure, call us. We will tell you whether OT is the right starting point.

Do I need a referral to see an occupational therapist in New Jersey?

For most patients and most insurance plans, you can see an OT directly without a referral. Some Medicare plans and some specific HMO plans require a referral from a primary care physician. We verify referral requirements as part of insurance verification before your first visit.

How many OT sessions will I need?

It depends on the condition. Acute issues such as post-surgical recovery often need weekly sessions for 4 to 8 weeks. Chronic conditions like posture-related pain may benefit from biweekly sessions over a longer period. Pediatric and neurodiverse cases may involve ongoing care plans. Your OT will recommend a specific schedule for your case after the first visit, not an open-ended subscription.

Can occupational therapy help with autism, sensory issues, or pediatric concerns?

Yes. Nia Patel has extensive experience working with the ASD and neurodiverse population across all ages, from young toddlers to older adults. She works on sensory regulation, fine motor skills, and functional independence using evidence-based practice tailored to each patient.
